Integrated Design Engineers' North Transfer Station Rebuild project was selected as a candidate for the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) 2017 IDEAS² “People’s Choice” Award for excellence in steel-framed building design.

The AISC IDEAS² Awards are the American steel industry’s highest honors recognizing excellence in steel building design. Projects are judged based on how well they achieved the building’s program, their use of innovative design approaches or materials, expression of architectural intent, and use of construction methods that increased productivity.

Other candidates for the People's Choice award include Four World Trade Center, National Museum of African American History and Culture, and Nippert Stadium West Pavilion at the University of Cincinnati.

Notable features of the North Transfer Station steel design developed by Integrated Design Engineers are the Tipping and Transfer Building’s 200-foot long-span roof trusses, which allowed Seattle Public Utilities to uphold its community agreement for maximum building height limits, and the “floating corner,” a 50-foot cantilever truss and a 120-foot main transfer truss system that supports the weight of the Tipping and Transfer Building at its southwest corner without using any supporting columns or walls.

When completed later this year, the entire North Transfer Station Rebuild project will serve as a model for community-friendly municipal facility design.
